Neal was a gentle and gracious character in town. Many thought him to be a little slow. Although it might sound cruel, most of them regularly tested their theory by giving Neal a choice between a dollar and a fifty-cent-piece. Neal always took the four-bits. Eventually, a kind-hearted individual could no longer stand the ongoing jest made at Neal’s expense. He went up to Neal, took him off to the side and said, “Neal, please don’t let these folks take advantage of you. The half-dollar may look pretty, but the dollar bill is worth twice as much. "I know," whispered Neal, "but if I start taking the dollar, they'll stop giving me the fifty-cents!"
